As I promised:

We see different powerlines next to Grünwettersbach. On the left the 110 kV line from Karlsruhe via Ettlingen and Langensteinbach to Birkenfeld. The bigger line used to have two 220 kV circuits, nowadays the right one is operated at 110 kV.

As you can see, these towers look quite new, not like pylons from the 1920s. Some years ago (don't ask me, when) this line underwent a complete renovation. BTW, how is this form of pylon called? There are a few unofficial names for in German (Strickleitermast, Zickazackmast, Kaktusmast etc.)

Anchor pylons have a separate traverse for ground wires only. On suspension towers, these wires are installed on the first and second half-traverse.

Completely renewed? No! Near Dietenhausen some old original pylons still remain.

Interconnection between Germany and France

The cities of Strasbourg in France and Kehl in Germany form a common urban area. There are multiple bridges crossing the river Rhine connecting both cities, even a tram line operates between both cities since 2017. Beside traffic, also a high-voltage power line crosses the Rhine and connects the electricity grids of both countries...
...but really?

Today I visited this interesting river crossing. I know it since I was a child (multiple trips to Strasbourg with school etc.) and I always wanted to check out these interesting transmission towers. Now the time has come as it's not far away anymore from me.

A general view of the crossing from German side. Crossing tower design is based on the typical shape of Badenwerk pylons from the 1930-1960. Up to today you can find a lot of these in the former State of Baden (Western part of nowadays Baden-Württemberg)

On the anchor tower on the German side you can see, that only 3 of the 6 phases seem to be in use. The remaining are grounded here.

The powerline following towards the crossing has pylons for only one circuit, similar to the ones near Pforzheim but without additional traverse on top. Completely unusual: These line has absolutely no ground wire on top!

There are some oddities on this line regarding connection of German and French grid. While German grid operates on 110 kV, equivalent on French grid is 63 kV. Therefore transformers are needed to connect. And there are no - whether at Sundheim or Port du Rhin substation. The line has no ground wire, absolutely rare in Germany (I only know the old 110 kV delta line from Meitingen to Memmingen who shares this feature). Even weirder that the one-circuit pylons seem to be renewed some years ago: their pylon number start with 10xx , which indicates new pylons on an old location, and the operator's name on the signs is EnBW (Energie Baden-Württemberg) which was formed in 1997. So in the late 1990s or early 2000s this line possibly underwent an almost complete renovation.

But why? Why is there a powerline with huge crossing towers, which is out of use since surely 20 years? I think now it's my turn to find the answer...

On the mainsite here, it saids 'Single circuit tower' or how we dutches say 'driehoeksmast' or translated 'triangle tower'

Nice pictures btw! The crossing towers looks suprisingly 'dutch' eventough these are taken at the french-german border. Reminds me a bit of the old 150 kv towers at the Amercentrale here.

110 kV-substation southeast of Filderstadt-Sielmingen. The tower on the right belongs to the 110 kV-line to Oberboihingen, the pylon on the left is part of the 110 kV-line to Echterdingen.

Have you checked how this looks on the french side? Is it still connected and what kind of pylons do they use, german or french ones?

I didn't check the French side "live" but via Google Street view. The first pylon after the crossing is also of german design and there all 6 cables end without any connection further.

Today we're in Württemberg, the second half of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg (hence it's name). While a lot of the area of Württemberg in the north, east and south is quite rural, the region on the river Neckar between Stuttgart and Heilbronn is one of the most densely populated in Germany. Historically, it's well known for its industrialization during the 19. century. Up until today, there's a lot of industry: Cars, mechanical engineering, logistics etc. with a lot of world-known companies founded during that time: Mercedes-Benz, Bosch, Porsche, Würth, Kärcher, Stihl etc.

All this industries of course need a lot of power for manufacturing. Already in the early days of connected electricity grids, multiple companies built their power lines. Unlike in neighboring federal states Baden and Bavaria, no unified company like Badenwerk and Bayernwerk was founded during the 1920s. A lot of companies with small distribution areas or only one powerline (like WLAG, which built the first 110-kV-line in Württemberg between 1919 and 1921) were existent. Quite a big mashup. In 1939, the Energieversorgung Schwaben (EVS) was founded by unifying all Württemberg electrical grid companies. These unification was rather forced than voluntarily. In 1997, Badenwerk and EVS merged to the present-day Energieversrogung Baden-Württemberg (EnBW) with their grid division TransnetBW (380/220 kV) and Netze BW (110 kV).

Ludwigsburg-Hoheneck is one of the biggest substations in Germany. A lot (!) of powerlines are connected to this at all three levels. It was built by the company RWE in the year 1926, when the North-South-powerline from Brauweiler to Bludenz was erected. Later the 380- and 220-kV-grid of EVS was added to the substation as well as 110-kV-lines from EVS, Neckarwerke and Kraftwerk Altwürttemberg AG (KAWAG). Today these belong to Netze BW and Syna. This picture from afar mentions the dimensions: It's like the Sequoia Forest among the "Mastenwoud/Mastenwald". 8-)

Here we see three lines coming from Hoheneck substation towards north. If you're familiar with the tower designs of German national grid, then the RWE would come in your mind. RWE in the middle of EnBW area? Yes, the big 380-kV-line in the background is still operated by former RWE-company Amprion. It's by the way the oldest powerline for 380 kV in Germany, built in 1954-57. Because there's a separated area supplied by Amprion in the Bavarian district of Schwaben (Swabia), several 220- and 380-kV-lines of Amprion run through Baden-Württemberg. At some points, there are crossings of 380-kV-lines from TransnetBW and Amprion. An impressive view!

The four-circuit-line in the foreground also reminds of RWE-design. This line was built in the 1950s by RWE subsidiary KAWAG, which built and operated the coal fired power plant at Heilbronn and the running water power plant in the Neckar at Pleidelsheim. Two circuits are operated by KAWAG-successor Syna, two by Netze BW. The small 110-kV-line on donau pylons runs from Walheim power plant towards Hoheneck and was built by Neckarwerke, now poerated by Netze BW.

Here a branch connets the line with Wasserkraftwerk Pleidelsheim. This line was built somewhere during the 1990s as replacement of a two-circuit line on three-level-pylons. Unforunately I never sah this pylons, knowing its existence only from historical aerial photos of the geoportal bw.
Of the four circuits, two are made as a loop, one as a hard branch and one is out of use.
