Poolse hoogspanningsmasten

Bericht door Donaumast » 06 okt 2022 20:28

Good evening,

I didn't found any topic about the polish power grid, so I start a new one. The usual voltages used are 400 kV, 220 kV, 110 kV, 15 kV and 400 V. Regionally there are sometimes power lines with 60 kV, 30 kV, 20 kV or 6 kV, historically 150 kV was used in central Poland. There also was a 750 kV power line to Belarus.

The polish electricity pylons have a quite distinctive design. Unlike in germany or other countries, there are no regional different designs, because the polish power grid after 1945 was constructed by a single state-owned company. Most pylons in poland use a 3-level design with an additional traverse for lightning protection wires. More seldom, Donau type pylons are used too. Single-circuit power lines for 110 kV use a asymmetric design, which is probably the most frequent design in poland. Rarely, concrete portals or stel tube poles are used. Single-circuit lines of 220 and 400 kV use delta or portal schemes. Medium-voltage power lines usually are mounted on reinforced concrete poles.

The most interesting pylons nevertheless can be found in western Poland. Here are still many electricity pylons which were built by the germans before 1945. Unlike in germany, most of them were not yet replaced or removed until now and are still in use, though some are in a desolate condition. In pomerania, one-level towers were predominant, while in silesia donau pylons (some with lightning wire traverse) of this era can be found.

Substation of former RCN Konstantynow. RCN Konstantynow was the central longwave broadcasting facility of Poland and one of the most powerful broadcasting facility in the world. It was built from 1970 to 1974 and used as antenna for its 2000 kW transmitter, which worked on 227 kHz (after 1988 225 kHz) a 646 metres tall radio mast, which was insulated against ground for a voltage of 120 kV. Until the construction of Burj Kalifa this mast was the highest object built by mankind!

The mast collapsed on August 8th, 1991 during the exchange of one of its topmost guy wires. As consequence the old transmitter at Raszyn made its job. In the mid of the 1990ies one planned to rebuild the mast and although some segements for it were manufactured and the base was started to be refurbished construction work was stopped by law after heavy protests of people living nearby, who feared that the powerful transmitter would make them ill.
As replacement a new facility with a 330 metres and a 289 metres tall mast was built near solec Kujaski - several kilometres away from the next settlement.
RCN Konstantynow however remained unused and dilipated more and more, which is well shown on this picture I made in 2015 from its former 110 kV-substation.
