Why was HVDC Kingsnorth ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HVDC_Kingsnorth ) shut-down only 13 years of operation? Why were the used mercury arc valves not replaced by thyristors?

Hallo,

Groeten ,
Peter

It says in the wikipedia article:
"The system described was shut down in 1986[2] or 1987[3] following system reinforcement on the network it was embedded in."
So in short the AC-network in the region was upgraded and could now carry the additional 600MW which went through the HVDC-link. This eliminated the need for a separate link and thus also reduce3d grid losses. I suspect also the older technology (mercury valves) has something to do with it as well.
